In 1965, Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. Hosseini and his family relocated to Iran in 1970, where his father worked for the Afghan Embassy in Tehran. Hosseini's family returned to Kabul in 1973, and his youngest sibling was born in July of that year. Hosseini's father found work in Paris, France, and relocated the family there. They were unable to return to Afghanistan because of the Saur Revolution, which took place in April 1978 when the PDPA communist party seized power in a brutal coup. Hosseini graduated from San Jose Independence High School in 1984 and attended Santa Clara University, where he got a bachelor's degree in biology in 1988. The next year, he enrolled in the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, where he got his M.D. in 1993. In 1996, he finished his internal medicine residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He practiced medicine for over 10 years, until a year and a half after The Kite Runner was released. Hosseini is presently a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Goodwill Envoy. He has been working with the Khaled Hosseini Foundation to give humanitarian aid in Afghanistan. The idea for the organization was sparked by Hosseini's 2007 trip to Afghanistan with UNHCR.

  • Guilt and Redemption: At the heart of "The Kite Runner" is Amir's terrible guilt and his never-ending quest for redemption. The narrative begins with a flashback to Amir's childhood, when he sees a heinous act of betrayal against Hassan, his best friend. Overwhelmed by his own fear and shame, Amir does nothing to intervene, leaving his conscience to plague him forever. This royal gesture sets the Stage for Amir's lifetime quest to atone for his transgressions. As the story progresses, Amir seeks redemption via various means. He sets out on a risky quest to find Hassan's kid, Sohrab, in war-torn Afghanistan, seeking to atone for his sins in the past. Amir not only tackles the terrible realities of his birthplace on this journey, but he also learns about the power of forgiveness and self-forgiveness. Finally, Amir finds redemption through his altruistic acts and sacrifices, converting himself from a guilt-ridden individual into a compassionate and self-aware man.

  • Friendship and Loyalty: The link between Amir and Hassan in "The Kite Runner" brilliantly conveys the essence of friendship and commitment. Despite their ethnic and societal disparities, the two brothers form an unshakable bond through shared experiences, mutual respect, and steadfast commitment. Even in the face of injustice and betrayal, Hassan's persistent dedication to Amir demonstrates the strength of their bond. The novel addresses the difficulties of social hierarchy and discrimination within Afghan society through the relationship between Amir and Hassan. As a privileged Pashtun, Amir is frequently conflicted by his feelings and societal standards, which leads to his betrayal of Hassan. However, "The Kite Runner" provides a ray of hope by depicting true moments of bonding that transcend these societal obstacles.

  •  "The Kite Runner" offers a riveting portrayal of Afghanistan's turbulent history in addition to its exploration of atonement and friendship. Hosseini deftly blends key historical events into the plot, such as the Soviet invasion and the establishment of the Taliban, exposing the catastrophic impact of these conflicts on the lives of regular Afghans.
